July 7, 2019 - Weekly Update

  • As a result of great cooperation in our community we have ten different camping locations throughout town at churches, schools, parks, and commercial sites.  Official RAGBRAI vehicle passes and rider wrist bands are required to camp at these locations. 

  • Forty large groups (approximately 8,000 people) have been placed in specific areas reserved for them. 

  • Open camping areas include: main campgrounds (Madison County Fairgrounds), West School Street, Giffin Fields, City Park and the designated family camping area at the Madison County Historical Complex 

  • Several RV hookups and indoor (with AC) sleeping is available at the main campground on a first come, first serve basis.  No reservations will be taken for these areas. 

  • The main parking lot at the Winterset High School is designated for RV/bus parking with no electricity or green space for tenting. 

  • Winterset has two RV dump stations – Madison County Fairgrounds (1146 W Summit) and City Park Campground (100 E Court Ave). 


  • Banners and signs to mark the route and for photo ops are being ordered. 

  • More t-shirts are being reordered. 


  • Making “Proud Host of Winterset RAGBRAI” signs to put in people’s yards who have signed up to host riders. 

  • Several small groups have been placed in homes of local residents signed up to host visitors. 


  • Post office is making a commemorative stamp with the Winterset RAGBRAI® logo which will be available for purchase. 

  • Merchant pep rally was held on Tuesday, July 2; passed along merchant-specific info and answered questions about what to expect on July 22 

  • Next town hall scheduled for Tuesday, July 9 at 6:30pm on the south courthouse lawn 

  • Information for Madisonian special RAGBRAI flier due July 5 

  • Will be promoting Winterset RAGBRAI on podcast 

  • Media placement has been determined.  Will be located on East Jefferson by Library 

  • Iowa Gallivant visit was a success; had a long write-up on Madison County and blogger plans to come back to Winterset several times to go more in-depth on several of our sites 


  • Volunteer meeting and sign making party scheduled for Tuesday, July 16 at 6:30pm at the Winterset High School.  Come get your volunteer shirt, find out more about what you’ll be doing on July 22 and make a sign for your yard 

  • Removed the emergency/medical page as this information will be on the Maps page eventually.

  • Removed the entertainment nav bar and moved the schedule to the Riders nav bar.  The Vendor page will turn into the Food page under the Riders nav bar.

  • Vendor page was updated with latest approved vendors and maps.

  • Over the next two weeks the website will be paired down the minimum amount of information for RAGBRAI for ease of use and ability to serve during the July 22nd event.

June 21, 2019 - Weekly Update

  • Town Hall Meeting – TONIGHT – 6:30 PM south lawn of the Madison County Courthouse 

  • July 16 – Volunteer meeting & sign making party – location TBD 

  • All signage needs are due July 1 to the Publicity committee 

  • All ads and info for the special RAGBRAI® flier are due July 1 to the Madisonian/Publicity committee 

  • All map changes/additions are due July 1 to the Publicity committee 

  • Working on banners and decorations for around the square 


Public Safety
  • The Winterset RAGBRAI committee completed inclement weather exercise to prepare for the day of the event. 

June 14, 2019 - Weekly Update

  • The Art Center has agreed to help us decorate bikes to use around town. 

  • A sign making party has been planned for July 16.  We will have blank signs with the logo available for people to decorate and then use in their yards. 


  • Congratulations to the winner of the art contest – Abby Hoefing (5th grade)!  All entries will be displayed at the Chamber office beginning July 1 – July 22.  The winning entry will be sent to the statewide contest for a chance to win $350. 

  • Travel blogger, The Iowa Gallivant, is coming to visit June 19 – 20.  He will visit numerous sites in Madison County and will write about them on his blog, which is promoted through RAGBRAI®. 

  • Next town hall schedule for Tuesday, June 25 at 6:30pm on the courthouse steps/lawn.  Join us for an update on all things RAGBRAI. 

  • Map information is due July 1.  Please send to Meisha and Megan. 

  • Special flier for the Madisonian is due July 1.  All sponsorship ads need to be completed by this date as well. 

  • Signage for the square is being finalized now – flower pot banners, courthouse banners, photo ops and individual committee signage.  All signage requests are due July 15. 

  • Working on getting the community excited for RAGBRAI.  A countdown clock has been added to the Chamber’s digital sign.

June 7, 2019 - Weekly Update

  • Hospitality is working on photo ops for around town during the event. 

  • The committee is also working on community activities to help community members decorate their business windows and their homes for the big day. 


  • Kids’ art contest winner was chosen and will be announced soon via social media.  The winner will be submitted to the statewide contest and all entries will be used to decorate on July 22. 

  • Hosted RAGBRAI® during their pre-inspection route on Monday, June 3.  The committees had a cookout in the park with Pork Producers sandwiches.  It was well received amount RAGBRAI riders.  They’re excited to come back in July. 

  • Completed an interview with Winterset Living.  The article will be appearing in their June issue.

May 24, 2019 - Weekly Update

  • Housing hosts are needed!  To date, the committee has 6 hosts signed up with 128 teams requesting housing.  The teams will begin being placed the first week of June.  Help spread the word. 


  • The committee has started to receive several out of state orders for t-shirts. 

  • They are working on signs and banners to put up around town during the overnight stay.

May 17, 2019 - Weekly Update

  • We currently have 25 of the largest groups placed at designated campground locations around Winterset. 

  • In the next couple weeks, we will be reaching out to the next 30 largest groups on the official RAGBRAI® to place them in a specific campground. 


  • T-shirt sales are underway and T-shirt Monday discounts start this coming Monday, May 20.  For participating businesses, check out the t-shirt page

May 10, 2019 - Weekly Update

  • T-shirts are now available for $20.  You may purchase them online or at Village Bootery, Country Cutters or the Madison County Chamber of Commerce. 

  • Winterset RAGBRAI® Relays will be held on June 3 at 6 P.M. at the Winterset City Park.  Grab a friend, your Winterset RAGBRAI shirt and compete for bragging rights! 

  • Monday discounts around town for wearing your Winterset RABRAI t-shirts will begin on May 20.  To see a list of participating retailers, visit the bottom of this page

  • A town hall meeting will be held next Tuesday, May 14 at New Bridge Church at 6:30 P.M.  Come learn information about the current planning process, expected road closures, the impact the event may have on residents, their businesses and the town as well as answer any questions you may have. 

  • Kids art contest reminder – K-5 due May 18.  Drop off at the Chamber, library or school office.  The Winterset winner will receive a free Winterset RAGBRAI youth t-shirt and will be entered into the overnight town contest. 


  • Establishing Uber/Lyft pickup and drop off points for those coming into the concert

May 3, 2019 - Weekly Update

  • You can start purchasing your Winterset RAGBRAI® t-shirts at the Madison County Chamber of Commerce, Country Cutters or Village Bootery on May 6th.  Online sales will be up and running soon. 

  • Hospitality is looking for some local businesses to participate in Monday t-shirt discounts.  If someone comes into your business each Monday leading up to RAGBRAI wearing the official local t-shirt, you could offer them some sort of discount.  If you are interested, please fill out this form

  • The community meeting is scheduled for May 14 at New Bridge Church at 6:30.  Volunteer needs, housing needs, and general information will be reviewed. 

  • Just a reminder, the local RAGBRAI art contest is going on for those students in kindergarten through fifth grade.  Turn in your submissions to the Madison County Chamber of Commerce, Winterset Public Library, Winterset Elementary School or Winterset Middle School by Saturday, May 18.

April 26, 2019 - Weekly Update

  • T-shirts will be available for sale in early May at the Chamber, Country Cutters, and Village Bootery 

  • Town hall meeting will be held on May 14 at 6:30 p.m. at the New Bridges Church 

  • Working with local businesses willing to offer a discount to a patron wearing their RAGBRAI shirt on Mondays 

  • Securing finish line items 

  • Working on fun signs for along the route to bring the riders into town 

  • Working on securing a local artist to create a mural for the square to day of the ride through town 

  • Working with volunteer committee to get “Ask Me” buttons for all of the volunteers 

Law Enforcement
  • Currently working to find enough barricades for the needs of the overnight stay 

  • Medical tents will be located at the fairgrounds and Monument Park near the square 

  • Currently working on articles promoting RAGBRAI® in Winterset with Des Moines Partnership and Winterset Living

April 19, 2019 - Weekly Update

  • The committee has been working hard o find he music acts for the big day!  They hope to have an announcement soon!

  • They are discussing a special ride into the beautiful city park to see Cutler-Donahue covered bridge and Clark's Tower.  The ride would then continue to the Freedom Rock and John Wayne statue.

  • The committee is also working on yard games for fun activities to do on the square

Food & Vendors
  • The vendor application is now available here. If you don't hear from a committee member within 24hours of submitting the form, contact us here.

  • They are currently working on signage along the road including "junk bikes" as sign holders.

  • The first round of shirts will be ordered this week.

  • Don't forget to become a host for riders by filling out this form.

April 12, 2019 - Weekly Update

  • T-shirt bids are back in – keep watching for your chance to purchase yours!

  • The big project right now for this group is putting together the finish line with the race-like atmosphere.  They are currently looking for race signage.

  • They will also need volunteers at the finish line and t-shirt booth.  Please feel free to fill out this form to volunteer.

Information Center​
  • Official information center has been moved to the community building at the Madison County Fairgrounds instead of the Jackson building.

  • There will be two satellite welcome centers to guide RAGBRAI participants as they enter town. There will be one for riders at the corner of Hwy 92 and Summit and a second for support vehicles at the north 4-way stop on 169.

  • The information center committee is currently looking for volunteers to fill shifts at the Information Center and Welcome Center up on the square.  Ideal candidates are knowledgeable about Winterset, our attractions, amenities, directions, etc.  Both locations are air conditioned.  If interested, please sign up using this form.

Law Enforcement​
  • The route entering and exiting Winterset has been established!

    • Entering -

      • The riders will come in from the west on Hwy 92 to West Summit.

      • They will go east on Summit and turn north on 16th Avenue.

      • They will then turn east onto West Jefferson Street.

      • Once on Jefferson, they will travel into the downtown area.

    • Exiting –

      • The riders will make their way to the square and then travel north on John Wayne Drive to US Hwy 169 North.

  • Preliminary street and alley closures to vehicles:

    • 1st Avenue from Washington to Green Street

    • John Wayne Drive from South Street to the alley south of Green

    • 2nd Street from Court to Jefferson

    • Jefferson from 2nd Avenue to 2nd Street

    • Court from 2nd Avenue to 2nd Street

    • Washington from 1st Avenue to 2nd Street

    • Alleys within the closed streets will also be closed to vehicles

  • This month the focus is on the kids’ art contest.  The committee is currently working on the rules of the contest as well as how to distribute this information. One statewide winner will be awarded $350 for their entry.

  • The event flier has been discussed with The Madisonian.

Public Safety​
  • Working on securing a possible building which could be utilized in the event of weather related issues.

  • The committee is working with law enforcement and medical on where their vital services should be located.

April 5, 2019 - Weekly Update

  • We will be adding more communications to support the personnel around town.  This is a need as there will be many additional people in town making service an issue.  We want to ensure personnel are equipped with the proper communication tools.

Food & Vendors
  • The group held an informational meeting on Wednesday, April 3rd for non-profit groups interested in having food vendor booths.

  • The form to sign up as a vendor will be available soon!

  • More information on housing will be available after the May 1st release of who made it through the lottery.
Information Center​
  • The main information center during the event will be at the Jackson Building located at the Madison County Fairgrounds.

  • A secondary information center will be available at the Madison County Chamber of Commerce Welcome Center with a satellite station along the entrance of Winterset when the riders come into town.

  • We will be looking for volunteers to help with these information locations.  The two main centers will be air conditioned.  If you are interested, please fill out this form.

Law Enforcement​
  • We are currently preparing to add additional officers to support the amount of people coming into Winterset and Madison County.

  • The team is working to establish first aid stations around town to ensure triage of injured or affected riders.

  • If you would like to have a Winterset RAGBRAI spokesperson come speak at your event, fill out a request.

  • Local RAGBRAI t-shirts will be available for purchase soon through the website!

  • Maps are currently being created and will be available on the website soon.

Public Safety​
  • Currently we are working to ensure the routes around town can be accessed for riders and if necessary, emergency personnel.

March 22, 2019 - PR Release
